Tragic driver carried false papers
A driver who plunged to his death after his car smashed through a crash barrier on the Bridge of Peace in Drogheda last week was a Moldovan national travelling on false Latvian papers, it is believed.
Gardai believe the dead man Andrei Vastlita (21) was illegally in Ireland. Documents found at the scene originally suggested he may have been from Latvia, this is not now thought to be the case.
Officers are still inquiring whether the car was taxed or insured and whether Mr Vastlita had consumed alcohol at the time of his death. Toxicology tests have been conducted and will not be available until the coroner’s inquest into Mr Vastlita’s death.
Drogheda Gardai have also ruled out suggestions that the car had been tailed by a patrol car at the time of the smash. They also revealed that the car may have been purchased in Ireland.
Officers say a friend of the deceased identified his body last Tuesday.
