Local rescue group finds body in river

The Drogheda Coastguard Unit and members of the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service spent a number of hours combing the Boyne near Scotch Hall for a Lithuanian man who had been missing since December 31.

The BFRRS recovered a body on Tuesday afternoon, close to the viaduct.

It is believed to be that of Jonaitis Romaauldus (60) who had been working as a fisherman on the Celtic Venture fishing boat which is currently docked at Drogheda Port.

He left the boat shortly before 12am on New Years Eve saying he was going up town. He had not been seen since and has not made contact with either his employers or his work colleagues.

The Coastguard and the Boyne Fisherman’s Rescue and Recovery Service (BFRRS) were called out on Friday after a pedestrian on the De Lacy bridge noticed a jacket floating in the river.

However, the weekend search proved fruitless and on Monday the Coastguard helicopter joined the search and spent a number of hours combing the river between Tom Roes Point and the Bridge of Peace.

Mr Romaauldus had been living in Ireland for the past three years. He is approximately 5ft 3’ in height, has short grey hair, a stout face and was last seen wearing a dark bomber jacket. He was in possession of his passport and mobile phone when he left the boat.

The Drogheda Coastguard and the BFRRS continued their search around the De Lacy Bridge.
