Drogheda Independent - Friday June 13th 2003
FOUR teenage members of Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service (BFRRS) were the heroes of the hour last weekend when they saved a man from drowning in the treacherous River Boyne.
Two of the local rescue volunteers are currently in the middle of sitting their Leaving Certificate examinations in St Joseph's CBS, Drogheda.
Andrew Casey (17), Philip Woods (17), Wayne Hurley (18) and Anulan Ó hEochaidh (19) were on a training exercise in the river at 6pm on Sunday evening when they spotted a man entering the water at the Bridge of Peace.
The four BFRRS volunteers immediately went to the scene and were able to drag the man from the river. He was immediately taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for observation.
‘The boys were out on a training exercise on Sunday when they spotted the man going into the Boyne.
‘They took the man from the river. They are completely elated at actually saving a man’s life and we are very proud of them,’ said BFRRS spokesperson Mary Power.
Philip and Wayne are both in the middle of their Leaving Certificate exams, Andrew is going into sixth year, also in St Joseph’s, while Anulan is a student in college.
‘There is always so much said about the youth today but this shows that there really is some great young people out there.
‘These four lads give up their time and energy to help other people and it really is to be admired and praised,’ said Ms Power.
