Boyne rescue team's Irish Sea Voyage
Dundalk Democrat 13th September 2003
THOSE in the Ardee area, and indeed across Mid-Louth, would have been very interested in a huge undertaking by the Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service members last Saturday night.
Members set out to row across the Irish sea from the Isle of Man to Drogheda to raise funds for a new €260,000 boathouse, the first in the crew's 30 year history of life saving in rivers all over Ireland.
The ten-man crew had been training for the past three months, and no doubt the people of Mid-Louth will support their efforts to have the new boathouse built.
It will be recalled that Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service held a meeting in Ardee some time ago, aimed at starting up a branch of their service in the Deeside town.
Over the years they have received great support from the people of Ardee, and as a result of this named one of their rescue boats 'Ferdia' at a ceremony held in front of the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady. The new boat was blessed by Rev. Fr. Eamon Treanor, C.C.
It was stated at the time that if enough people from the Ardee area were interested in training in river rescue, then a rescue boat would be located in Ardee for use in an emergency in the rivers in the area. Plans are ongoing.
