Dorner's Green boathouse for Boyne Fishermen?
by James Cunningham, Drogheda Leader - January 15th 2003
The Mayor of Drogheda, Malachy Godfrey has called on Drogheda Port to offer the Dorner's Green site as the location for a new boathouse for the Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service. According to Malachy, the site is ideal and will ensure that both ends of the river are adequately covered.
The Mayor revealed that rescue boats from the town's two rescue organisations find it hard to navigate the river at high tide especially around the Dominic's Bridge section of the river.
Malachy said, "In fact a new boat house at Dorner's Green will be ideal. It means that both ends of the river will be covered by two highly professional rescue crews" The Mayor of Drogheda also called for the erection of life buoys along the Drogheda stretch of the river Boyne.
He said, "The area around the Haymarket development has become notorious for drowning and I am calling for action." He added, "Over the years people have thrown life buoys into the river without thinking of the consequences."
"I believe people who throw, the buoys into the river for fun must be punished and fined. We've had too many river tragedies in recent years."
