Three rescuers to receive bravery awards from Minister
Drogheda Independent - Friday January 24th 2003
Three members of the Boyne Fisherman's Rescue and Recovery Service (BFRRS) are to receive bravery awards from Environment Minister Martin Cullen this February.
The rescuers will be honoured with the prestigious Irish Water Safety Association (IWSA) 'Just In Time' awards in recognition for a two dramatic rescues last September.
At approximately 1.3Opm on September 26, rescuer Alan McGovern jumped into the River Boyne to assist a man who was seen being carried downstream.
Later on the same day, rescuers Stephen Hodgins and Frank Smyth saved the life of a young girl who fell into the river in the North Quay area.
A spokesperson for the group said last week: 'It is excellent that our work has been recognised not only in the Drogheda area but nationally. Everybody in the group is delighted about the awards and no doubt it will make our case for a boathouse even stronger.'
The BFRRS have thanked the people of Drogheda for donating some €14,000 in aid of their community paging system which played a major role in the two rescues.
Gardai and bereaved family members have also been thanked for their ongoing support.
These awards mark the latest acknowledgment of the group's efforts after receiving an ESB REHAB People of the Year Award in 2000 and a County Louth People of the Year Award in 2001.
