Grateful family donate boat to rescue service

THE hard work and dedication of the Drogheda Boyne Fishermen Rescue Service was recognised and rewarded this week in a touching donation from a family grateful that these men do what they do.
The rescue volunteers were donated a boat by the Murdoch family from Killough in County Down. Back in February the Fishermen recovered the body of young Jordan Murdoch and his family wanted to show their appreciation.
The search for 14-year-old Jordan took about three weeks and was based off the Down coast. He was swept out to sea when playing with a friend. The friend, a twelve year old, was rescued and although he had to be treated for shock and hypothermia, survived the tragic event.
After three weeks the official search for Jordan was called off. His parents had identified a hat and coat that washed up on the shore as belonging to him. However, the Boyne Fishermen stayed on and found him, and the Murdoch family wished to repay them for their dedication.
The new boat, a 5.5 metre rigid inflatable will be called Jordan after the young boy who tragically lost his life.
Richard Skelly, spokesperson for the Boyne Fishermen said they were amazed by the generosity of the Murdoch family. He said this new boat will improve coverage on the Boyne and make nationwide searches possible, expanding the operations they can undertake.
When members of the crew went to Down last week to meet the Murdoch’s they were told to expect a presentation but this was far more than they anticipated he said.
He estimated the value of the boat at about €20,000 but said it is a massive asset for the work they do.
