Fishermen pay visit to Ardee to display vessel Jordan

By Fiona Magennis, Drogheda Independent - Wednesday June 9th 2004

THE Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service (BFRRS) visited Ardee on Monday, May 31.

They brought with them the boat Jordan which was presented to them by the people of Killough in County Down after the BFRRS helped in the search for schoolboy Jordan Murdock.

Pupils from the Monastery Boys School and Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire were given a talk on water safety, and how to stay safe and respect the water.

The rescue service distributed literature from the Irish Water Safety Council. Crew members from Louth and Meath took part and concentrated on the 14 steps to safe swimming, the need for lifejackets on boats and how important they are if an accident happens.

Pupils were also informed about new laws which have been introduced in relation to wearing life jackets on boats.

They were also given a demonstration on the use of diving equipment in rescue and recovery work.

Some of the BFRRS who are also members of the Red Cross gave a demonstration in basic life support.

Great interest was shown by all the pupils who attended and the day was very informative.

A spokesperson for the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue said: ‘We do our bit to try and get the message across. These talks may help save their lives and in the future may help them save someone else’s life; it has a knock on effect.

‘Our message is, water safety first, last and always.’

The visit in the school took place to coincide with Irish Water Safety Week.
