€1 Million Boathouse to open

By Sinéad Flanagan - editor@meathpost.com - Meath Post - Tuesday 26th February 2008

A €1 Million Boathouse for a local water rescue group is near completion according to the Vice Chairman of the club. The Boyne Fishermen's Rescue and Recovery service is hoping to have their new Boat House open by the end of March.

"There's four of us at present storing equipment in our homes. The Chairman is storing a boat in a shed out the back of his house.

"We got a Meath Leader Grant and a Cross Border Reconciliation Grant," says Thomas Daly. "We've spent nearly €300,000 and people have donated roughly €450,000 to the project," he says. A number of Business People around Drogheda donated money, labour and materials to the building. "A few Business People donated blocks and that kind of thing. One Contractor put in a Slip way free of charge. Another contractor put in the sewage system" among other things in the building. An electrician worked on it for a number of weeks to get the wiring right without charging a cent while others carried out work at cost price.

"We couldn't have done it without them. We totally rely on local support. We ran a few benefit nights and did some Church gate collections to raise the rest of the money," Thomas says.

The service volunteers themselves also put in much time and effort through painting and decorating the new premises, giving their time to fundraising for it among other efforts that they have done to make this happen.

The service hope the Boat House will be up and running by the end of March though the official opening will not take place until a few weeks after that.
